Obituary of Ana Hernandez
Please share a memory of Ana to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our Mother, Ana Mercedes Duran Hernandez, was born in Jánico, Dominican Republic on October 2, 1940. Her parents Jose and Edilia Duran had 10 children of which Mami was second. She had little schooling as there was not much opportunity in that time and area.
Mami loved her parents very much, but her life was her mother, she mentioned how she worked her whole life to send money to her mother, to help care for her and her siblings. Mami met a wonderful man named Juan Hernandez and they married in 1969 on the Lower East Side of NYC. They worked very hard to bring their parents and siblings here. Mami worked in sewing factories and Papi worked in restaurants.
Mami and Papi had two children, Frank, born in 1970, and Homaira (me) in 1973. We lived humbly in the projects and were active in our church Our Lady of Sorrows. Mami and Papi were Cursillistas and part of groups within the church and the community. Mami was also a Eucharistic Minister and would take the Holy Communion to the elderly. She told me that she was very proud and felt it was a great honor for her to take the Communion to those who could not make it to church.
When Papi retired, they moved to Pembroke Pines, Florida. Papi passed away December 14, 2021, and Mami was devastated. She had many illnesses throughout her life and a few close calls that she lived through but the hardest was her Alzheimer's. I felt her slipping away, remembering less and less, her health declining.
Mami's journey ended on June 30th, 2025, and she was surrounded by my brother Frankie, my husband Hiram, her friends Carmen and Domingo, me and two hospice nurses. Mami had a heart of gold and touched everyone she encountered. She was so loving, she loved to cook and feed everyone she could. She always could find the good in someone and tell us to treat everyone with love and respect. With her illness she talked so much of wanting to be with Papi, her mother and father. We will love her and miss her every day.
Rest in peace Mami.
