Please share a memory of Tindaro to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Tindaro “Tony” Salvatore Calabrese, (94) was born in White Plains, NY on January 28, 1923 to Dominic and Flavia Savoca Calabrese.

He graduated from White Plains High School in 1941 and was inducted in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943.  After completing Basic Training in Miami Beach, he was selected for Officers’ Training and briefly attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine.  Tony received his wings and the rank of Staff Sergeant after attending a radio and gunnery training school in St. Louis, MO and was assigned to the 15th Air Force stationed in Foggia, Italy.  He was awarded the American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and was discharged in 1946.

Tony married Rose Ventresca on July 11, 1948 in White Plains, NY and moved to Miami.  They joined St. Mary’s Catholic Church where Tony became active with the Holy Name Society and eventually became its president.  Under the leadership of Msgr. Patrick O’Donohue, Pastor, he was appointed Executive Chairman of the St. Mary’s Building Fund Drive and after years of work, the construction of the present Cathedral was accomplished.

In 1949, Tony joined the Miami Council #1726 of the Knights of Columbus and later transferred to Marion Council in North Miami.  After moving to Hialeah in 1957, he became a Charter Member of the newly formed Fr. Lawrence J. Flynn Council #4772 and in 1958, became its second Grand Knight.  Tony joined the Fourth Degree of the Father Andrew Brown General Assembly in 1960 and became the Faithful Navigator in 1962.

Once in Hialeah and members of Immaculate Conception Church, Tony continued his activities in the Holy Name Society.  He was elected Vice-President in 1959.  His talents were made known to Msgr. Dominick Barry by Msgr. O’Donohue and the former appointed him General Chairman of the Building Drive.  A second addition to the school was built and this helped to alleviate the tremendous debt at I.C.

In 1959, Msgr. Barry reactivated the Ushers Club and appointed Tony as the President.  In 1960, he was appointed General Chairman of the Parish Carnival and through his inspired leadership and the cooperation of his committee, a large profit was realized.

Tony was employed by R & R Construction Company which built many of the homes in Hialeah.  As the company began to expand into Palm Springs Shopping Center, he became the General Maintenance Superintendent and held that position for 33 years, retiring in 1984.

Tony and Rose moved to Davie, FL in 2003 and are current members of St. Mark Catholic Church in Sunshine Ranches.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Antoinette Keys and Josephine Muhart and brother, Joseph Calabrese.
