Gaetano Provenzale, to us his name was cuckoo because of his sense of humor, he was my grandpa. He would always be nice to my sister and I, and tell many jokes. He would make everybody smile whether he was telling one of his famous stories or joking around. Cuckoo was the best grandpa I could ask for. My grandpa was one of those irreplaceable people, where you could only meet someone like him once in your life. I can't begin to describe the immense impact he had on me as I have grown into the young women I am now. Though we lived nearly 3,000 miles apart, his love and joy was a consistent presence in my life. His stories at the dinner table, told with such fervor, always made me laugh, no matter how many times we had heard about the barbershop or him attending my brother's school for Grandparents' day. He had the remarkable ability to light up a room with his smile and laugh, even as we would impatiently wait to hear him grade our meals when we would cook for him. The love I have for my grandpa will always be there as he has inspired me to be strong in the face of adversity and loss, and kind in the face of hate. I love him with all my heart and I know he is in a better place now. Gigi

It's hard to fully capture the life and spirit of a man who achieved, built, learned and loved so much in his lifetime. It utterly amazes me how he overcame so much adversity in his life. The dispossession of his home during the war and the excruciating loss of both parents, not to mention his suffering brutal injuries. Most men would have held on to the ensuing bitterness, allowing it to color their outlook, life choices and faith. But not Guy. He was an exceptional man. His faith in God always remained strong, yet he was human enough to admit spiritual questions but possessed the courage and desire to explore for answers. With all that Guy achieved in academics and his career, nothing mattered more to him than his wife Gilda and the family. Knowing how close they were to his heart, it was all the more special to be welcomed by him into the Provenzale family. Although I was his son-in-law, his was a kinship and closeness bestowed to a son. Guy was a tremendous father to Laura, Anna Marie, Marcella and Lisa. Their unbreakable love and connection to him was a testament to that bond. 'Cuckoo' was an equally loving Grandpa, and our children GiGi and Spencer had the blessing of his presence in their lives. Guy's love and generosity came without strings. Always welcoming and quick to weave a connecting thread to a story in his life, I came to truly appreciate all that he shared. Reflecting on the man, in short he had it all: good health, a long life, strong faith, 4 beautiful daughters and a magnificent life partner in Gilda. But not be be lost among all that, he had integrity, throughout his life and to the end. Only the best of us can claim that. In fact, I think I can say he was the best man I've ever known. Thank you for all of your love and kindness, Guy. I love you. Although not quite centocinquanta, yours was a full life and you'll be sorely missed by la famiglia! -Joe

When he came to visit Ann Marie in Virginia, We thoroughly enjoyed visiting with him. The walks we took around the neighborhood were filled with the stories of his life in Italy, professional experiences, raising his children and, of course, how he met and courted Gilda. Gaetano was not only my Father In Law but a man who I truly loved like a father. I will miss all his fascinating stories at dinner, even though I heard them a million times. LOL, about his life and his accomplishments. I always admired him for the love he had for his wife. He would always tell people when he met them that she was his better half. I was blessed that he gave me his beautiful daughter and the beautiful grandchildren we gave him. He was the Allstar of Grandfathers. I thank God for having this man in my life and all the great moments we shared together. You will be sorely missed Dad. I love You Ken "Tempus Fugit"
