Thomas Joseph Conto, Sr., of Hollywood, FL, formerly of Rotterdam, NY, passed away at 90 years of age after a short illness on Saturday, April 4th, 2020. Born in Schenectady on December 9th, 1929, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Santoro) (Zeppetelli) and Carmino Conto.
A graduate of Draper High School, Tom was in the Navy for 3 years starting in 1949 where he worked as an x-ray technician at Bethesda Maryland Naval Hospital. He then worked at Sears & Roebuck company as a salesman, until he moved to Florida in 1969. While there, Tom built the Bella Conto Apartments building, and in 1971, he moved back to NY, continuing his career as a custom decorator at Sears. In 1982, Tom met and married Muriel (Moreau) (Synfelt) Conto, the love of his life. They eventually retired full-time to Hollywood, FL where Tom renovated and sold houses. Tom loved spending time with his friends and family, working on his houses, and was always helping his neighbors and family with projects. He also enjoyed planning trips, traveling with his wife, attending his grandkids sporting events, and having pasta Sunday dinners with the family.
Tom was the youngest of four siblings, late Leopoldo Zeppetelli, Mary (Conto) Chillairi and Joseph Conto. Tom is pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 37 years, Muriel Conto. He is survived by his sons Thomas (Beverly) Conto,Jr. and Dennis (June) Conto, Sr.; his four step-children, Ken Synfelt, Donna (Kevin) Cuomo, Susan (Steve) McDonald, and Shelley (Bill) Hoffman; his grandchildren Angela Horvath, Gina Ralston, Deanna Francisco, Julie Mercoglan, Elise Conto, Deidre Conto, Dennis Conto, Jr., Dylan Conto; step-grandchildren Riley Mathauer, Matthew Cuomo, David Cuomo, Shauna McDonald, Ethan McDonald, Jake Hoffman, Brett Hoffman; many nieces and nephews, seven great grandchildren and an eighth great grandchild due in 3 weeks.
Due to current circumstances a memorial service for Tom will held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Tom’s memory to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org. Tom-Muriel’s Facebook page will remain open and all are welcome to post memories and final words to him there.
