John Hickey, Jr, 72 of Miami passed away Wednesday May 6, 2020 in Miami, Florida. Born March 7, 1948. Private cremation. Arrangements by Joseph A. Scarano Pines Memorial Chapel, 9000 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, Florida 33024 954-438-8222 In 1948 post-war America, when families embraced in the pure joy families can bring, God brought John Conrad Hickey, Jr. into the world of his proud parents, Donna Marie and Jack, and brother, Bryan, and a sister-to-come, Connie. As all who knew him understand, Johnny lived his life his way. He never stopped loving his parents, who gave him always their best, or his country, to which he gave his best in Vietnam. For countless hours he fished on the Scioto at his grandmother Ma’s, home, and canoed on the Olentangy, behind his house, catching even a prehistoric “hellbender.” He never stopped loving his son, “my boy,” Royce Conrad, or his daughter, “beloved Leda,” his dog, Pearl, and cat “Lucky.” As an adolescent, he snuck into to the OSU Gym and worked out as a gymnast with students. He was a great diver in the Junior Olympics. He graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute, attended OSU, and departed for Vietnam. He was a dedicated soldier. His return home hug from his mom at the airport made the Dispatch. He took a shot at business. He employed many refugees from Vietnam. The journey became long, hard, and challenged. Ultimately, Leda moved Johnny to Florida. He would be the first to tell us “she extended my life and made my last days of peace and joy watching the little pond from my porch.” Johnny would say—“Thanks to the VA and all the nurses and doctors at OSU and elsewhere who helped along the way, May God Bless All.”
