"I Love You But I Don't Like You!"
by Anthony
As a child, you sometimes take for granted...
A grandmother's role, in this life we have been handed...
Yes, we shrugged our shoulders and rolled our eyes...
As she gave us knowledge of the world, even when "world" was in short supply...
She tried to instill traditional values, when our minds were filled with mush...
and how she made us feel things were good, even when times were rough...
Yet, I recall the frustration as we ran off to play...
But I remember these words, she jokingly had to say...
"I Love you, but I don't like you!"
Although she was a short woman, you didn't you raise your voice!
Because a large wooden spoon was her weapon of choice...
With spoon in hand, a scream "come here!"
she couldn't give chase but you knew, eventually discipline was near...
But Oh! did she come running when she heard you cry...
Usually, because of something stupid, yet she dried your eyes...
I recall the frustration as we ran off to play...
But I remember these words, she jokingly had to say...
"I Love you, but I don't like you!"
As we grew older, teenagers mad when she handed us a broom,
asked to reach something high, open a jar, or even come out of are room...
We helped grandma out, as we grumbled, we did what we were told...
Because as we were becoming adults, she was also getting old...
Driving our cars and going after girls. There was no more asking to put aways our toys...
Conversations were about hygiene, clean underwear and yes, even protection. Because boys will be boys...
I recall the frustration as we ran to do what we did in that day...
But I remember these words, she jokingly had to say...
"I Love you, but I don't like you!"
Now were adults, what we wouldn't give to have our childhood back again
not to run and play, only to hear voice and hold her hand.
Grandma we won't be mad, when you tell us, to make our bed or clean our room...
wash our hands, go to be early or even get hit with the spoon.
But now I understand, what you were trying to teach us, all along.
Be kind our mothers and try to keep this family going strong.
No more frustration, we're here to celebrate you today
and I still remember those words you jokingly had to say.
"I love you, but I don't like you"
