EVOL's LIFE STORY
Evol Blackman was the oldest of seven siblings born to Leonard and Laura Blackman. She was born in Siparia, Trinidad. As a young teen she and her siblings found themselves without their mother, Laura, who died in childbirth. She therefore had to help her father in caring for her younger brothers and sisters.
After some time they were placed in the care of their mother's sister, known to everyone as Aunty Milly. Aunty (as we called her) was very strict and raised them with an iron rod and they all spoke lovingly of. They all acknowledged that the strict upbringing they received from her turned out to be one of the best they could have had. Growing up, Evol and one of her siblings, Evelyn, attended Osmond High School, of which Evol was particularly proud. She repeatedly spoke of the many train rides they enjoyed to and from Port-of-Spain and the long walks at the helm to Mass on Sundays up a steep hill with Aunty Milly to a Roman Catholic Church.
She loved to talk about the happy childhood experiences where they enjoyed every imaginable fruit growing in their yard (especially mangos) she would exclaim after eating them "We had a feast!" Evol would also talk about the animals they had (especially the cows) which her father, our grandfather would milk for them daily. Later Evol, my mother became Mrs. Evol Hackett when she married my father Lionel (Sonny) Hackett at the young age twenty-five years. They subsequently had four children, Patsy, Steve, Allison, and Anthony. We too, were brought up with the strictest of discipline.
Mommy was a very gentle, caring soul, who was loved by everyone, family, relatives and friends. Mommy went over and above the call of duty. While in Trinidad, she worked for a brief period at the National Insurance Board, and in 1979 migrated to Rochester New York where she lived and worked as a health care aide of years before retiring. Her service was excellent. She relocated to Florida and lived there for the last two and a half years of her life. She will be sorely missed.
Eternal rest great unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her, may she rest in peace Amen. Eternal rest great unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her, may she rest in peace Amen.
