Obituary of Jose Christian Castro

Please share a memory of Jose to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On January 21, 2025, Jose Christian Castro, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away at the age of 92. Joe, or Joey, as he was more commonly known, was born on October 30, 1932, in Manila, Philippines to Juanita Castro Connolly. He earned his sociology degree from the University of the Philippines. Joey bravely protected the streets of Quezon City as a police officer. On May 5, 1962, he married his soulmate Felicitas Beltran Caguioa who he met at the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation). They raised three daughters, Angela, Caroline, and Katherine. On November 25, 1969, the young family travelled to the US in search of a better life. They settled in Miami, Florida where Joey worked odd jobs with the help of the Filipino old timers. He worked tirelessly at Balmoral Hotel in Miami Beach as a kitchen help. He served as a dedicated Miami-Dade Correctional Officer in 1972. He navigated relentlessly through the main jail, Ward D (Jackson Memorial Hospital) and North Dade Detention Center until he retired in 1998. He privately and consistently practiced target shooting with a trusted officer until he gained expertise as a marksman. Joey was a loving, church-going family man and celebrated his passion for life. He was a loyal member of numerous parishes including Corpus Christi, St. James, St. Bartholomew and St John the 23rd. He played friendly games of Mahjong, staying up to the wee hours of the night. He took his family on adventurous road trips. He was a food connoisseur especially for Filipino food and seafood. Joey was an avid fitness enthusiast, staying in shape by exercising daily by performing calisthenics, practicing marital arts including Tai Chi, Wing Chung and Arnis. He binged watched Bonanza, Big Valley, Streets of San Francisco, and Walker Texas Ranger. Most of all, he was delighted to joke around with friends, family, and especially with his 7 granddaughters. He enjoyed letting them dress him up and doing his makeup in all of their silly antics. He was amused by the short films they produced including “Keeping with the Kastros” and “Insanity” where he played the protagonist and antagonist respectively. He played the piano by ear, often performing La Cumparsita and the Boogie Woogie. He was a passionate dancer, jumping into the Macarena and the Electric Slide at family gatherings. Joey was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita (Niña). He is survived by his wife, Felicitas (Fely), his 3 daughters and 3 son-in-laws: Angela (Angie) & Albert Rey, Caroline (Lalaine) & Robert Fraidenburg, and Katherine (Kathy) & Robert J. Cipriano, Jr., and 7 granddaughters Maritza, Melanie, Cassie, Allison, Emily, Nina and Natalie.
